The African Centre for Cities (ACC) at the University of Cape Town (UCT) is offering scholarships for graduate studies in South Africa. This is a great opportunity for students interested in researching energy access and transitions in African cities.

Who can apply?

  • Applicants from African countries
  • Master’s degree in anthropology, geography, sociology, urban studies, or a similar field
  • Experience conducting research in underserved urban areas
  • Willingness to do research in Khayelitsha, South Africa
  • Eager to participate in the project, including workshops and travel
  • Open to traveling to Europe for training (recommended, but not required)

Bonus points if you have:

  • Skills in visual or multimodal anthropology (documentary filmmaking, podcasting, etc.)
  • Experience working on energy issues in South Africa
  • Fluency in isiXhosa, a local South African language

What are you studying?

The scholarship is for a PhD or Master’s degree as part of a project called CLAIMS to Energy Citizenship. This project looks at how South Africa is changing its energy systems and how people are involved in this process.

The project has three main areas of focus:

  • Everyday practices and activism related to energy access (led by Prof Karen Waltorp)
  • How local governments are involved in energy transitions (led by Dr Liza Cirolia)
  • Combining the findings from the other two areas to understand how people participate in energy infrastructure (led by the project team)

Scholarship benefits:

  • The scholarship covers your full tuition fees for up to three years (ZAR 315,000 per year).
  • You’ll also get extra funding to cover costs for travel and research in the field.

  • A motivation letter (maximum 2 pages) explaining:
    • Why you want to do a PhD at the ACC and how it fits with your career goals
    • How your experience matches the scholarship requirements (refer to your CV)
    • What unique skills and experiences you bring to the project
    • How you would approach your research based on the project description
  • An up-to-date CV (maximum 2 pages) with contact details for two academic referees
  • Copies of your academic certificates and transcripts
  • A writing sample (250 words)
