Who are Canon Collins and Ros Moger & Terry Furlong?

The Canon Collins Trust, in partnership with the Ros Moger and Terry Furlong group, is offering scholarships to support postgraduate studies in South Africa. Ros and Terry were inspiring educators who dedicated their lives to making a difference through education. Since 2001, their friends and family have been raising funds to award scholarships in their memory, honoring their commitment to social justice.

What are the Canon Collins RMTF Scholarships?

These scholarships are designed to financially assist exceptional individuals from southern Africa who are pursuing postgraduate degrees (Master’s or PhD) in South Africa. The scholarships are meant to help those who are dedicated to social justice and who believe that a higher level of education is crucial for them to achieve their goals of creating a more open and just society.

Who can apply?

  • Citizenship or Refugee Status: You must be a citizen of or have refugee status in one of these seven countries: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, or Zambia.
  • Residency: You must be normally resident in one of the above countries.
  • Academic Background: You must have a good first degree (minimum upper second class or equivalent) or be about to graduate in the year of application.
  • University Choice: You must be studying or applying to study at a South African university.
  • Field of Study: In 2024, scholarships will only be awarded to students pursuing postgraduate degrees in three specific areas:
    • Justice (including Climate Justice, Law, Economics, and Politics)
    • Education policy and practice
    • Humanities (including Literature, History, Anthropology, and the Arts)

Important things to know before you apply:

  • Read the Guidelines Carefully: Before applying, it’s essential to download and thoroughly read the scholarship guidelines. This will ensure you understand all the eligibility requirements, application procedures, and selection criteria.
  • Not for Namibia, South Africa, or Zimbabwe: If you are from Namibia, South Africa, or Zimbabwe and are interested in a scholarship to fund your studies, you should apply for the Canon Collins Sol Plaatje scholarship instead.

What are the scholarship benefits?

  • Financial Support: The Canon Collins RMTF Scholarships provide financial support for up to a maximum of two years for Master’s degrees and three years for PhD programs. The exact amount of funding will vary depending on your individual circumstances and will range from R20,000 to R100,000.
  • Support for Different Study Modes: The scholarship supports both full-time and part-time students. Additionally, they consider applications from those who wish to pursue their studies through distance learning.
