This pattern is for a crochet animal toy for a baby. It will be nice to make and good for your baby’s development. The pattern uses basic stitches, so you don’t have to be an expert crocheter!
Materials:
Yarn: You can use any yarn you like, but I recommend using a 100% cotton 4-ply or double knit.
Fabric for the eyes and nose: Any fabric you like that is thin enough to bend easily.
Crochet hooks: Use a 2mm hook for your main crochet work and 1.5mm hook for the ears if you want them to look fluffy! I used a 2mm and 1.5mm Clover Soft Touch Hooks from Amazon
Tapestry needle (optional): If you want to sew some features on your creation later on, then this will be helpful!
Polyester stuffing (optional): To add some fluffiness into your project later on if desired!
Scissors: To cut off excess yarn when needed before sewing together sections of fabric together or when making facial features by hand sewing them onto your doll’s face with thread sparingly until completion
Head & Body:
The head is made using a half-double crochet stitch.
- Chain 2, DC in 3rd chain from hook.
Repeat this step until you have 5 stitches on your hook; then join with a slip stitch to the first DC (which will be the first of 2 DCs on the row).
Ears (make 2):
Here’s what you’ll need to make the ears:
- Yarn in your preferred colors, weight and fiber content. I used two colors of Bernat Softee Baby yarn, but any type of soft yarn will do.
- Crochet hook in a size appropriate for your yarn (the packaging should tell you what size to use). I used a 4 mm hook for the Bernat Softee Baby yarn.
Tail:
Make a chain of 8 stitches.
Turn and crochet in the back loop only. Repeat until the tail is long enough.
Legs (make 4):
Using blue yarn and a 3.5mm hook, make 4 legs. Make sure the length is consistent for all four legs. Sew them to the body of your doll so that they sit under the arms, with 2 of them on either side of the body (making sure they are not twisted).
Arm (make 2):
- Make 2
- Crochet in the round. A crochet project that is worked back and forth can be easily made into a hat by working each side separately, but this method will allow you to crochet both sides at once.
- Use a smaller hook than recommended for your yarn: When working with chunky or bulky yarns, you should use a smaller hook than specified on the label to reduce gaps between stitches. It is also helpful if you are working with a thinner yarn that tends to split more often than not (for example, acrylic).
- Select an easy-to-work with yarn: If possible, choose one of your favorite colors so that it becomes less important how long it takes before you finish crocheting your baby hat!
Assembly:
To assemble, first sew the head and body together. Then sew the ears and tail on, before sewing on the legs and arms. Finally, sew on any facial features like eyes or nose, then add a bow or flower for extra detail!
Finishing touches:
Before sewing on the finishing touches, take a moment to admire your work—the little bear is adorable!
Now you’re ready to sew on all of its features:
- Sew arms and legs to body.
- Sew ears to head.
- Sew tail onto body.
- Sew eyes, nose, mouth and buttons (see photo).
