Are you looking for a monkey stuffed animal free pattern?

Recently, a friend of mine asked if I would make a monkey stuffed animal for her to give as a gift. Excited for a new project (and not thinking about my growing mountain of unfinished projects), I agreed. One would think stuffed monkey free patterns would be in abundance. Download, print, and sew in a day or so – easy, peasy. There are always free stuffed animal patterns to be found in the wonderful world of Pinterest, right?
Not this time. I searched for a day or so and couldn’t find a lot of options for a free felt Monkey stuffed animal pattern! I think I found two and neither of them really fit my idea. So, I decided to design one.
Felt Monkey Stuffed Animal Pattern
UPDATE: A fully updated and digitized version of this pattern is now available in our shop.
Side note: what really is the proper (or most popular) term? I grew up with “Stuffie” or “Stuffed Animal” but have seen them called so many other things: Softie, Plushie…What’s your favorite?
If you like sewing felt animal patterns, you may also like the other felt animals I designed. They make great gifts!

For my first attempt at designing my own monkey stuffed animal, I think he turned out great! What do you think?

This is a quick, easy stuffed animal sewing project that a beginner learning to sew could tackle as well!
To sew your own Monkey Stuffed Animal, you will need:
- The Pattern [A fully updated and digitized version of this pattern is now available in our shop.]
- Felt
- Fabric (I purchased a quarter yard because I was looking for a specific fabric but you just need a few scraps)
- Embroidery thread to match
- Hand-sewing needle
- Poly-Fil stuffing (this is my favorite kind, especially for smaller softies)
- Clover Wonder Clips (optional)
- Scissors (these are my favorite for cutting precisely)
- Felt glue (Optional – this is my favorite brand)
- Freezer paper (Optional – Check out my tutorial to learn how to cut felt with freezer paper if you’ve never used freezer paper before)
To assemble the Monkey Stuffed Animal:
- Cut all of the monkey stuffed animal pieces from the pattern
- Hand-stitch the tail to the monkey’s back and face to monkey’s body
- Stitch the facial features to the felt monkey’s face
- Applique the tummy patch to the monkey’s body and inner ear pieces to outer ear pieces
- Place the back of the ear and the front of the ear with their right sides touching and sew together, leaving a gap where the ear attaches to the head.
- Flip ears right side out
- Fold over corners at base of ear toward center and hold in place with a few stitches (will be covered up so thread color doesn’t matter)
- Sew the hands to the arms and the feet to the legs
- Place the arms together with right sides facing. Sew the fronts/backs of arms together, leaving a gap to turn right side. I left a gap at the wrist to make it easier to pull through.
- Repeat for the felt monkey’s legs
- Turn the arms and the legs right side.
- Hand-stitch the gap closed
- Pin the felt monkey’s front and back body pieces together (outsides touching) and pin the ears in position.
- Stuff the arms and pin into position in the body
- Sew around the stuffed monkey’s body, starting from the leg area on the left side to the leg area on the right side, clockwise over the head
- Turn the monkey right side out
- Stuff the legs and hand-sew into the monkey’s body
- Stuff the monkey’s body and hand-stitch the opening shut

- Cut two squares of fabric
- Place the squares with outsides facing and pin together
- Sew around the squares, leaving a gap at one corner
- Turn the blanket right side out
- Hand-stitch the gap closed
- Top-stitch all the way around the blanket
- Stitch one corner of the blanket to the monkey’s hand
Notes on sewing your own Felt Monkey Toy:
- Using a smaller than normal stitch length ensures the seams won’t bust once the monkey is stuffed
- Reinforce the stitching in places that might be susceptible (arms/legs)
- There are many other ways to attach the arms/legs. I chose to stuff the arms/legs separate from the body because I wanted a seam there.
- The monkey’s finished size came out to be less than 8 inches (I can’t remember exactly.) If I were to make him again, I would probably enlarge the pattern to make him easier to work with.
