How Long Can A Baby Be In A Bouncer Chair For

If you do use a baby walker, bouncer or seat, it’s best to use them for no more than 20 minutes at a time.

Baby bouncers are such wonderful things for both babies and parents. It gives your baby a comfy and safe place to watch mom and dad while they work on tasks around the house. As parents, you probably love bounders because it keeps babies contained and can help soothe them when they are fussy.

However, you might have a few questions about your bouncer. If you’ve ever asked things such as when can a baby use it, how long can they be in it, or if they can sleep in it, we have answers for you. Here are a few things to think about if you’re wondering about how long a baby can be in a bouncer.

At What Age Can a Baby Start Using a Bouncer?

This depends a bit on the baby and the bouncer. Some bouncers are rated for more than one age, and stage of life. With bouncers like this, they often start at the newborn stage and move all the way up to a toddler chair. So, it’s important to look at this when buying a bouncer. Base what you’re buying on the age ranges it fits and if it will work for your current situation.

How long can Baby Sit in a Bouncer Per Day?

The answer you get to this question will probably vary from parent to parent. Some parents just put the baby in their bouncer when mom or dad are making dinner. Others might just use it when they need to do something quickly like running to the bathroom for a minute. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that babies and children not be left in the same position for more than an hour. So, the best advice is to probably not leave your baby in their bouncer for more than one hour at a time.

Can they Sleep in a Bouncer?

No. The American Association of Pediatrics (AAP) does not recommend this. They recommend having the baby sleep somewhere safer. They should sleep in a firm place that is flat. You’ll also want to make sure there aren’t any loose items nearby. So, if you notice your baby has fallen asleep or is starting to get sleepy while in their bouncer, it would be better to move them to their regular sleeping space.

When Does Baby Outgrow their Bouncer?

Again, this depends a bit on the bouncer. You’ll need to look over the instructions to be able to determine this. Unless it’s a bouncer that can adjust as your child grows, you’ll want to stop using the bouncer as soon as they can sit up by themselves. This is usually around six months.

As far as bouncers go, one of the very best is the new Ergo baby bouncer. It features 3-in-one sizing. So, it can be used for newborns as a bouncer all the way up to toddler ages as a chair. So, they won’t phase out of it within six months. The height of the bouncer can easily be changed, the fabric is breathable, it’s washable, and it even folds down flat so you can easily take it with you anywhere.

The benefits of baby bouncers

From soothing fussy tots to spacial awareness development, bouncers come with a host of benefits for both baby and you!

  • Soothing: A baby bouncer is a small seat that you can strap your baby into, but unlike static chairs it is designed to move, which can help to pacify your little one when your arms need a break. ‘That bouncing motion is really soothing; babies love that rhythmic movement,’ says Lucy Shrimpton, Sleep Consultant and Founder of The Sleep Nanny.
  • Baby awareness: It can also be a great tool to help your baby develop spacial awareness and benefit from a different point of view. ‘Bouncers sit in an almost 45 degree angle, so your baby is not fully upright but they’re not laying down either, so they can get to see you and look around,’ explains Lucy. ‘Babies spend a lot of time on their backs, so it’s nice to let them sit up for a while.’
  • Multitasking: When your new baby arrives it’s OK to let the chores slide! But after a while normality will need to resume. Popping your little one into a bouncer for 20 mins won’t have any impact on your parent-baby bond, but it will help you function. ‘It’s the perfect place to put your baby if you’re busy multi-tasking and you need them to be safe and secure and where you can see them,’ says Lucy.
  • Help with reflux: Do you have a fussy baby who just won’t settle? ‘If they’re suffering from reflux, a bouncer can help with wind,’ says Lucy. ‘When they’ve had their milk rather than laying down – sitting in a bouncer for a little bit can help with digestion as they’re in a more upright position.’
  • Growing families: A baby bouncer is essential for parents who have more than one child. ‘At bath time, you’re trying to juggle everything – washing and drying your baby while your toddler’s splashing around. A bouncer can be handy as you know that they’re safe but they can still be a part of what’s going on,’ says Lucy.

Baby bouncer safety guidelines

Bouncers are generally best for newborns and babies up to about six months old or until they can sit up on their own. They are safe to use, but stick to the following guidelines.

  1. Bouncers are not safe to sleep in. ‘Babies should always sleep on their backs on a flat mattress with no loose coverings or no loose items, foot to the base with head clear of the top,’ advises Lucy.
  2. Short naps are fine. ‘If your baby nods off for five minutes while you’re reading a bedtime story to their sibling and you can see that they’re OK, that’s fine – but don’t leave them to sleep in the bouncer,’ she adds.
  3. Always refer to safety guidelines. ‘I can’t speak for all the products on the market, so my safety advice is to consult the guidelines before you start using it – and even before you buy it,’ says Lucy.
  4. Never leave your baby unattended. ‘Always make sure that bouncer is in sight and you’ve got your eye on them while they’re in it.’
